Vafeiadis, Georgios

Vafeiadis, Georgios (Chios 1832 – Constantinople 25 Dec. 1890/6 Jan. 1891) Journalist and teacher, whose family was from Crete. He completed his general studies starting in his birthplace, then in Smyrna under the auspices of his uncle Stephanos Vasileiadis, and later in Athens.

Then he went to Constantinople, where he tutored the Revelakis family. At the same time he wrote articles in many of the city’s periodicals and in 1860-1871 published his Chronos, one of the earliest almanacs published in Greece. He was co-publisher “owner with liability” (6/18 October 1870 – 27 April/9 May 1881), editor from early January 1867 and one of the main contributors (20 August/1 September 1866-27 April/9 May 1881) to the newspaper Neologos in Constantinople. He then served as co-editor of the Bucharest newspaper Syllogoi, together with his brother-in-law T, Roubinis (1882-1888), and also collaborated with the French-language newspaper Spectateur d’Orient, which was published in Athens by Eteocles Kyriakopoulos who also published the Constantinople newspaper Byzantis (27 September/9 October 1889 – 25 December 1890/6 January 1891) and in the compilation of the nine-volume Greek-language Dictionary of History and Geography, (Constantinople, 1869-1892). Together with Stavros I. Boutyras and Ioannis A. Vretos, he translated the work by Ponsonde Terrail, Knights of the Night into Greek (Constantinople 1868).
