Content Description (long):

“This book has collected together catalogues of newspapers and periodicals that were published in the 12 prefectures of Macedonia, on Mount Athos and in the three prefectures of Thrace, […] The volume also includes the publications put out by societies or other organizations originating in these prefectures, and expressing their effort to communicate with their ancestral lands, to maintain their ties and above all to inform their migrant-members.

[…]

This is a painstaking effort to record all the publications that were produced – those that have been identified, of course – irrespective of the frequency of their circulation, the length of their life, their ethnic, political or party views or dependence, and their language.

[…]

This study does not include printed matter published in Thessaloniki, since detailed reference is made to these newspapers (mainly), but also to the periodicals, in Ephimeridographisi tis Thessalonikis (Newspaper Writing in Thessaloniki) […].  On the contrary, it does include publications about Macedonia and Thrace in Thessaloniki – and in other cities – whether to serve typographical needs, or by local associations in Thessaloniki to inform their members about their homelands.

[…]

In any event the aim […] is to put together a chronicle of the provincial press that will provide a stimulus to various other local researchers to “tell the story” of the press in their regions. And finally, one more ambition of this study is to confirm which, how many and what percentages of these newspapers have been preserved in central or local libraries or in private archives..

It is not necessary to point out that this effort is not – and cannot be – the final version of the catalogues in question. Quite a few newspapers constantly publish data of interest, however limited they may be and whether or not they have been reviewed, photographs of newspapers or their people are made public and proposals are generally expected for a future review of the text.

Finally, to complete this study, it was deemed necessary to select new illustrations of newspapers, especially those of the pre-war period or newspapers that circulated for a long time”. (Prologue, p. 9-10)
