On 15 May 1941, just one month after the occupation of Greece by Hitler’s hordes, the first secret nationwide liberation organisation came into being in Thessaloniki, called 'Eleftheria' (Freedom), which was one of the first resistance organisations established in the European countries occupied by the Nazis.

Some weeks after it was created, and specifically in late June of 1941, the organisation published an underground newspaper with the same optimistic title: Eleftheria, which has also been recorded in the chronicles of the Resistance press as one of the first underground newspapers in Europe […]”.
