Content Description (long):

“This historical study endeavours to highlight shades of political opinion and fluctuations in the ideological views of a significant section of the satirical press during a period of national crises and ideological turmoil.

The Balkan crises in the period 1875-1886 were regarded by almost all Greeks as an ideal opportunity to extend the borders of the Greek kingdom. At the same time they provided an occasion for entrenched superstitions, simplistic myths and stereotypical judgements to be recalled to the collective memory.

[…] In response to the Greeks’ wildest dreams, the satirical press at this point was approaching the limits of national delirium.”
